Assistant Library Director of Programming & Outreach

This is very responsible programming and outreach work involving the development and implementation of a variety of educational activities for the public library system for Marshall County.  Activities associated with the job include initiating, planning, and conducting a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library by children, teens, and adults, performing community outreach activities and preparing and conducting community surveys to determine appropriate library services and programs.  Additional activities include researching and submitting grant applications to supplement library operations, assisting with the development of annual budgets, and assisting with the daily operations of the library as needed.  Job responsibilities require a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years’ experience working for a public library, strong organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills, experience supervising and directing the activities of staff, considerable experience developing and implementing educational programs, experience conducting surveys and researching and preparing competitive grant applications.  Job performance is evaluated by the Library Director through review of the effectiveness of library educational programs, knowledge of library functions, systems and components, organizational and decision-making skills, level of support provided for management functions, expertise in conducting surveys and preparing competitive grant applications and ability to interact effectively with local officials, staff, and library patrons.

Necessary Work Requirements
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in management or closely related field (completion of a Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) preferred); and a minimum of three years of progressively responsible professional and/or administrative experience managing a library or non-profit; considerable experience supervising staff; strong organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills; considerable experience conducting surveys and preparing grant applications; ability to present interesting and informative public presentations; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
 
  • Thorough knowledge of TCA laws and regulations governing library operations including copyright and privacy laws.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Library Board Policies and Procedures including all revisions, updates, and amendments.
  • Thorough knowledge of networked computer hardware components and software applications (including internet screening devices) utilized for teaching computer skills.

Necessary Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid Tennessee Driver’s License and the ability to obtain vehicle insurance at standard rates.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen prior to employment.
