Probation Officer
The purpose of this position is to provide offender support to the Adult Probation Department. This is a very responsible legal, administrative, and case management position supervising adults who are placed on probation by Marshall County General Sessions Court or Lewisburg City Court. Activities associated with the job include assessing and supervising adults and fulfilling all requirements set out by their court judgement or plea. Additional responsibilities include crisis management, counseling, and providing other assistance including job placement, referrals to court ordered classes, and organizing community service work placement. Activities associated with the job require a background in caseload management, experience working with local and regional social service agencies, experience working in the court system, and strong organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills. Job performance is evaluated by the Probation Director through review of the decisions made in response to case management activities, knowledge of criminal court proceedings and resources available in the community to assist clients, ability to respond effectively to crisis situations, and organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in social services, Criminal Justice, Psychology or related field preferred. Criminal Justice experience and knowledge of laws pertaining to probation. Strong organizational, interpersonal and decision-making skills. Job Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To:
- Maintain accurate and complete case files and related documents on all probationers assigned to caseload.
- Counsel probationer for the purpose of alleviating existing and/or potential problems or destructive behaviors by encouraging
- Consult with social service agencies, rehabilitation centers, and mental health organizations to gather information for referrals as needed.
- Meet with probationer on a regular and consistent basis to ensure probation requirements are being fulfilled, administer drug screens to ensure there is no current drug use and address any concerns or violations which require immediate attention.
- All other duties as assigned.
Necessary Requirements of Work

A combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledge of judicial proceedings
- Knowledge of misdemeanor laws
- Knowledge of treatment options available in our community and surrounding area.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations.
- Knowledge of drug testing procedures and protocols.
- Ability to manage a large caseload and maintain all documentation required to comply with existing departmental policies.
- Ability to interact successfully with local officials, law enforcement personnel, social service providers, clients, co-workers, and the public.
Necessary Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid Tennessee Driver’s License and the ability to obtain vehicle insurance at standard rates.
- Must pass a criminal background check prior to employment.
